Emailing College Coaches
Short, specific, and easy to act on. Coaches read hundreds of these; the ones that get answered say who you are, why their program, and where the film is — in under 150 words.
1. First contact
Subject: [Grad year] [Position] — [Your name], Catoosa High School ([City], [State]) Coach [Last name], My name is [Your name], a [grad year] [position] at Catoosa High School in [City], [State] (Catoosa Athletics). 2. Follow-up after a camp, visit, or game
Subject: Thank you — [Your name], [grad year] [position] Coach [Last name], Thank you for [the camp / the visit / watching us on Friday]. I especially appreciated [one specific thing you learned or saw]. Since we spoke: [one update — new film, a result, a test score, a grade]. What works
- Send it yourself, from your own email. Coaches want to hear from the athlete, not a parent.
- One specific reason for that program beats five generic ones.
- Put the film link near the top. Make sure it opens without a login.
- Include your coach's contact information — recruiters will call them.
- Follow up every four to six weeks with something new, not "just checking in."
- Reply to every response within a day, even if the answer is "not right now."
